What are the causes of seeing ’shadow people’?
July 17th, 2009 | by admin |Tukmyhamster asked:
I’ve read that people taking crystal meth see them, what other conditions or circumstances cause the illusion of seeing shadow people?
So do you still feel fear when you see them even though you know that they are an illusion?
Can the fear be a physical symptom, like maybe the vision is accompanied by adrenelin or some other hormone that operates separate to a conscious fear?

Medically, eye problems can cause shadows and floaters.A detached retina can be especially disturbing. But,lets be honest, imagination and wanting to believe in the supernatural are the biggest cause. We all see movement and shadows out of the corners of our eyes.Silly as it is some people want it to be a ghost.
Something I usually don’t bring up,mental illness will also cause them.
I see many questions and answers that if honest are pointing towards mental illness. It’s sad but anyone saying that will be reported.Meanwhile their possible delusions will be reinforced by irresponsible fools that can’t see the damage they may be doing.

You might be interested in reading up on the fourth dimension, actually. In particular, the part where it talks about the shadows cast by different dimensions.
“If a light is shone on a three dimensional object, a two-dimensional shadow is cast. By dimensional analogy, light shone on a two-dimensional object in a two-dimensional world would cast a one-dimensional shadow, and light on a one-dimensional object in a one-dimensional world would cast a zero-dimensional shadow, that is, a point of non-light. Going the other way, one may infer that light shone on a four-dimensional object in a four dimensional world would cast a three-dimensional shadow.”
Illusion is merely a matter of perspective.

Nice Guy named several possibilities. My take on it is that just normal human vision explains much of it. Our eyes have evolved to have a preponderance of cone receptor cells in the periphery. The cone receptors are very sensitive to changes in light intensity, thus excellent for sensing an approach predator, but they are quite bad for sensing color or shape. We have to turn our head and look straight on for that.
Nowadays we usually don’t have to worry about a tiger stalking us, but our peripheral vision is still there doing its job. So when the peripheral vision detects a change in light intensity (e.g., a passing shadow, light flicker, etc), it’s our tendency to interpret that as motion, and when we turn to look and see nothing moving then one explanation people come up with is ghosts, or “shadow people”.

There are many reasons for seeing “shadow people”. The above responces are valid there is also the EMF theory. If the wiring in your house is drawing to much or not insulated well it can cause, hallucinations, paranioa, the feeling of dread, feeling ill and even audible hallucinations. But honestly no one knows the reason why a person sees a shadow person or manifested spirit and another does not. There are many theories and I am sure you will hear them all from the formetioned to innocence and nievity.

Sunlight or just light in general

They can be seen in haunted locations without taking crystal meth. Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Kentucky is one place where they are abundant. Floaters are not a possibility here either, as several people can see them at the same time. Mass hysteria would not account for the sightings as I have experimented by having people document the exact time they saw one, none knowing what the others has written. The shadows at Waverly Hills have nothing to do with peripheral vision, they are visible straight on. They also block a beam of light.

There are actually several things that can cause shadow men.
Quick moving shadows out of the corner of the eye are caused by a misinterpretation of movement of shadow and light in the peripheral vision. Although these are fairly common, often headlights passing by or an insect, they aren’t what most people refer to when they say shadow men.
Another form of shadow man is the road ghost. I you drive a lot down lonely highways at 3am you might run into one of these. I am told truck drivers don’t see many, but it stands to reason, truck drivers pull over and sleep when they are tired and are used to their hours.
These creatures are a sure sign that you need to pull over at the next rest stop and close your eyes for awhile. I used to have a job that would have me driving 8-10 hour trips sometimes through the night, sometimes during the day. More than once I swerved out of the road because I could swear there is someone standing in the road. But then when I stop, there is nothing.
Sleep paralysis often involves a dark figure standing over the person. This is sometimes called a shadow man, as sleep paralysis is often misinterpreted as a paranormal experience.
Finally there is the big Shadow Man sighting. This is the 3D image of a man all dark. They are often either standing there watching you, or walking down a hallway, sometimes turning into a room at the end of the hallway. They walk very stiff like and although they are all black, the arms face and legs seem very distinct. People who witness these shadow men are often frozen and terrified for a moment until the shadow man disappears. With the exception of the sleeping and paralysis, the terror, image and experience is very similar to sleep paralysis. Its my belief that fatigue or stress, or something else triggers something in the head which creates this form of hallucination. I believe the mechanics of the hallucination are the very same as those incorporated in the hallucinations in sleep paralysis.
Edit: This is longer than I meant, but I have experienced all these forms of shadowman and have studied them fairly extensively since college. Uropa is correct with that description.

I think the important factor here is what mean kitty brought up, these shadows are not really shadow but solid mass. This type of “shadow” is often seen strait on and not out of the corner of your eye. A true “shadow person” will instill a fear that makes many people unable to move. The cause may simply be that you are witnessing a true paranormal experience with your own eyes. If these things exist there will be no question when you see it.

I’ve seen these ’shadow people’ once or twice out the corner of my eye. Oh yes indeed. They must be true! If I’ve been typing in the dark, by the light of the monitor, it’s not unknown to define a figure in my peripheral vision. Also, if I look away from the white screen, I see strange shapes that fade away!
Hmmm? Let me think. People using the internet in bad light see shadow people. The myth of shadow people is spread by people on the internet. The rise of the ’shadow people’ has grown with the rise of the internet.
The sh*ts gonna hit the fan when all these things declare war on each other. According to intertubes, we’ve got vampires, werewolves, mermaids, good aliens, bad aliens, illuminati, shadow people, bigfoots, higher vibrations and the end of the world in 3 years. You couldn’t sell the script to a cheap Hollywood agent, but people would watch the movie.
